Ünite 12: Yolculuk Zamanı
Travel Time · A2
Gelecek zaman (-acak/-ecek) ve geçmiş tatil deneyimlerini anlatma.
Neler Yapacağız?
Gelecek Zaman — "-(y)EcEk"
The future tense — "-(y)EcEk"
The future tense describes an action that hasn't happened yet. Vowel-final roots take a "y" glide (oku+yacak=okuyacak, bekle+yecek=bekleyecek); the roots "ye-" and "de-" raise "e" to "i" before that "y", exactly like they do in the present continuous (ye+yecek=yiyecek, de+yecek=diyecek). Consonant-final roots soften when needed, like before any other vowel-initial suffix (git+ecek=gidecek). Both of the suffix's own vowels change together by 2-way harmony: -yacak/-yecek, -acak/-ecek.
| KökRoot | Gelecek ZamanFuture tense | AnlamMeaning |
|---|---|---|
| gel- (ends in a consonant) | gelecek | will come |
| git- (softens) | gidecek | will go |
| oku- (ends in a vowel) | okuyacak | will read |
| ye- (raises e → i) | yiyecek | will eat |
"k" Sesinin Kişi Ekinden Önce Yumuşaması
The tense's own "k" softens before certain personal endings
The future tense stem always ends in "k" (gelecek, gidecek). This "k" softens to "ğ" before a VOWEL-INITIAL personal ending — which only happens for 1st singular ("-Im") and 1st plural ("-Iz"): geleceğim, geleceğiz. Every other person's ending is consonant-initial ("-sIn", "-sInIz", "-lEr") or absent (3rd singular), so the "k" stays as-is: geleceksin, gelecek, geleceksiniz, gelecekler.
| ŞahısPerson | gelmek (gelecek zaman)gelmek (future tense) | "k" Ne Oldu?What happened to "k"? |
|---|---|---|
| ben | geleceğim | softened (ğ) |
| sen | geleceksin | unchanged |
| o | gelecek | unchanged |
| biz | geleceğiz | softened (ğ) |
| siz | geleceksiniz | unchanged |
| onlar | gelecekler | unchanged |

Olumsuz Gelecek Zaman
The negative future tense
The negative future tense is regular: the negation suffix "-mA" attaches to the root first (consonant-initial, so no softening or buffer needed), then this new stem (always vowel-final) takes the future suffix with a "y" glide: git+me+yecek=gitmeyecek, yap+ma+yacak=yapmayacak. The "k"-softening rule still applies the same way: gitmeyeceğim, yapmayacağız.
| FiilVerb | Olumsuz Gelecek ZamanNegative future | AnlamMeaning |
|---|---|---|
| gitmek | gitmeyecek | won't go |
| yapmak (1st singular) | yapmayacağım | I won't do |
| okumak (1st plural) | okumayacağız | we won't read |
Gelecek Planlarını Anlatmak
Talking about future plans
When talking about vacation plans, the future tense is usually paired with time adverbs: "yarın" (tomorrow), "gelecek hafta" (next week), "iki hafta sonra" (two weeks later), "bu yaz" (this summer). "Gelecek hafta/ay/yıl" (next week/month/year) are fixed time expressions — learned directly as vocabulary, just like "dün"/"bugün"/"yarın" (yesterday/today/tomorrow).
| Zaman ZarfıTime adverb | CümleSentence | AnlamMeaning |
|---|---|---|
| yarın | Yarın yola çıkacağız. | We'll set off tomorrow. |
| gelecek hafta | Gelecek hafta tatile çıkacağım. | I'm going on vacation next week. |
| iki hafta sonra | İki hafta sonra döneceğiz. | We'll return in two weeks. |
Geçmiş Bir Tatili Değerlendirmek
Öğrenilen Her Şeyi Bir Arada Kullanmak
Bringing everything together
Reflecting on a past vacation brings together almost every structure in this course: past tense for what you did ("Roma'yı gezdik" — We toured Rome), the nominal past copula for what something was like ("Otel çok güzeldi" — The hotel was very nice), the emphatic "-dır" for an objective assessment ("Roma, dünyanın en güzel şehirlerinden biridir" — Rome is one of the most beautiful cities in the world), comparison for weighing two vacations ("Bu tatil geçen yılkinden daha keyifliydi" — This vacation was more enjoyable than last year's), and the passive voice for a general comment ("Bu otel çok tavsiye edilir" — This hotel is highly recommended). Everything you've learned across twelve units now works together to tell a fluent story.
