Şu An Ne Yapıyorum
Şimdiki Zaman — "-ıyor/-iyor/-uyor/-üyor"
Present continuous
The present continuous describes an action happening right now. Vowel-final roots drop their final vowel (bekle- → bekl-); consonant-final roots keep the root as-is. Either way, a harmony vowel (4-way) plus a fixed "yor" is added. Some consonant-final roots ending in p/ç/t/k soften when the vowel-initial suffix attaches (git → gidiyor), but many one-syllable roots don't (yap → yapıyor).
| Kök (Root) | -Iyor Hali | Anlam |
|---|---|---|
| bekle- (ünlüyle biter) | bekliyor | is waiting |
| oku- (ünlüyle biter) | okuyor | is reading |
| gel- (ünsüzle biter) | geliyor | is coming |
| git- (yumuşar) | gidiyor | is going |
| yap- (yumuşamaz) | yapıyor | is doing |
Şahıs Ekleri — Şimdiki Zamanda Hep Aynı
Personal endings after -Iyor never vary by harmony
The personal endings come from the same family as the copula endings, but because "-Iyor" always ends in "o", the personal suffix that attaches on top is always the same ("u"-vowel form) — it does not vary with the root's own vowel harmony.

Case suffixes: to / at / from
Turkish uses three case suffixes to express location: the dative (-(y)A, "to where?"), the locative (-DA, "at where?"), and the ablative (-DEn, "from where?"). All three follow 2-way vowel harmony; the locative and ablative suffixes harden after a voiceless consonant (sınıf+ta, market+te).
| Soru | Ek | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Nereye? (to where?) | -(y)A | okula, eve, markete |
| Nerede? (at where?) | -DA | okulda, evde, markette |
| Nereden? (from where?) | -DEn | okuldan, evden, marketten |
Saat Kaç?
Saat Sorma ve Söyleme — "geçiyor" / "kala" / "buçuk"
Telling the time
On the exact hour, you simply say "saat" + the number. For the half hour, "buçuk" is added. If the minutes are under 30, the hour takes the accusative case and "geçiyor" ("is passing") is used; if over 30, the *next* hour takes the dative case and "kala" ("remaining") is used.
| Dakika | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| :00 (tam) | saat + sayı | saat üç |
| :15 | saat + sayıyı + çeyrek geçiyor | saat üçü çeyrek geçiyor |
| :30 | saat + sayı + buçuk | saat üç buçuk |
| :45 | saat + (sonraki sayı)'a + çeyrek kala | saat dörde çeyrek kala |
Ulaçlar — "-DIktEn sonra" / "-mEdEn önce"
Converbs: after doing ... / before doing ...
"-DIktEn sonra" ("after doing something") and "-mEdEn önce" ("before doing something") link two actions in time order. "-DIktEn sonra" is built by adding "-DIk" (a nominalizer) to the verb and then the ablative case. "-mEdEn önce" is a fixed suffix (-madan/-meden) attached directly to the root.
| Fiil | -DIktEn Sonra | -mEdEn Önce |
|---|---|---|
| gitmek | gittikten sonra | gitmeden önce |
| okumak | okuduktan sonra | okumadan önce |
| yemek | yedikten sonra | yemeden önce |
