Definite past tense
This describes a witnessed/certainly-known past action. Because the suffix starts with a consonant, the root itself never softens — but the suffix's own D hardens to T when the root ends in a voiceless consonant (f,s,t,k,ç,ş,h,p): git+di → gitti.

Note: the past tense's personal endings are NOT the same set you learned in Unit 1 ("-Im/-sIn/-Iz/-sInIz")! In particular, "we" uses "-k", not "-Iz": "geldik", not "geldiyiz".

Nominal past copula: "was/were"
The same "-DI" suffix, attached to a noun or adjective predicate, carries the meaning of "idi" — like English "was/were". A "y" glide is inserted after a vowel-final predicate. The personal endings are the same set from 4.1 (-m/-n/-∅/-k/-nIz/-lEr). "var" and "yok" conjugate regularly too: vardı, yoktu.

Şimdiki Zaman Hikaye Kipi — "-(i)yordu"
Past continuous: "was doing"
"-Iyor" (present continuous) + "-DI" (past copula) combine to describe an action that was ongoing in the past: "geliyordum" (geliyor+dum, the past of "geliyorum"). Because "-Iyor" always ends in "o", this combined suffix is always "-yordu". In the 3rd person plural, the plural marker comes BEFORE "-DI": "geliyorlardı", not "geliyordular".
