Pekiştirme (Bildirme Eki) — "-dır/-dir/-dur/-dür"
The emphatic/formal copula "-dır/-dir/-dur/-dür"
"-dır" is a 3rd person emphatic/formal copula that adds certainty or formality to a sentence: "Bu köprü eski." (plain, everyday "This bridge is old") vs. "Bu köprü eskidir." (formal/emphatic, "this bridge is indeed old"). Because it starts with a consonant, there's no root softening and no buffer letter needed. It follows 4-way vowel harmony (-dır/-dir/-dur/-dür), and if the root's final sound is in the FISTIKÇI ŞAHAP set (f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p) it hardens to "t": kitap+tır, Türk+tür, ilginç+tir — but öğretmen+dir, güzel+dir (this hardening rule is EXACTLY the same one used by the -DI/-DIk past-tense suffix).
| TabanBase | PekiştirmeEmphatic form | AnlamMeaning |
|---|---|---|
| kitap (p — hardens) | kitaptır | it is (indeed) a book |
| Türk (k — hardens) | Türktür | he/she is (indeed) Turkish |
| öğretmen (n — doesn't harden) | öğretmendir | he/she is (indeed) a teacher |
| güzel (l — doesn't harden) | güzeldir | it is (indeed) beautiful |
| ünlü (ends in a vowel) | ünlüdür | it is (indeed) famous |

The emphatic copula together with case suffixes
"-dır" can attach not just to a bare noun but to a predicate already inflected with a case suffix or a possessive: "masada" (locative, "on the table") + "-dır" = "masadadır" ("it is indeed on the table"). Harmony and hardening are still determined by the FINAL sound — "masada" ends in "a", so 4-way harmony still gives "-dır" (not "-dar"). The same logic applies to predicates already carrying a possessive + case combination: "otelin karşısında" (across from the hotel) + "-dır" = "otelin karşısındadır".
| Çekimli YüklemInflected predicate | + -dır | AnlamMeaning |
|---|---|---|
| meydanda (locative) | meydandadır | it is (indeed) in the square |
| otelin karşısında (possessive + locative) | otelin karşısındadır | it is (indeed) across from the hotel |
| şehir merkezinde (possessive + locative) | şehir merkezindedir | it is (indeed) in the city center |

Günlük Konuşma ile Resmi Tanıtım Metni Arasındaki Fark
Everyday speech vs. formal descriptive writing
When writing a text that INTRODUCES a city or place (a brochure, guidebook, encyclopedia entry), Turkish typically prefers "-dır" — it gives a more formal, objective tone than the bare predicate of everyday speech ("Bu cami eski." vs. "Bu cami eskidir."). When describing a city, Unit 7's equative suffix and "göre" structure are useful too: a sentence like "Rehbere göre bu köprü şehrin sembolüdür" (According to the guide, this bridge is the city's symbol) combines structures from both units.
| GünlükEveryday | Resmi Tanıtım (-dır)Formal description | AnlamMeaning |
|---|---|---|
| Bu cami eski. | Bu cami eskidir. | This mosque is (indeed) old. |
| Şehir kalabalık. | Şehir kalabalıktır. | The city is (indeed) crowded. |
| Otel meydana yakın. | Otel meydana yakındır. | The hotel is (indeed) close to the square. |
